I-49 backers praise House measure



The completion of Interstate 49 in western Arkansas will be vital to creating economic prosperity, according to an Arkansas resolution delivered to federal officials.

 

The state House of Representatives passed House Resolution 1018 on Feb. 17. The measure sponsored by state Rep. John Maddox, R-Mena, encourages the expansion of the I-49 north south corridor, which it says will improve accessibility and improve the economy for communities along the interstate.

ArDOT: I-49 extension from Alma to Barling ‘not viable’ as toll road

In a recent Frontier Metropolitan Planning Organization meeting in Fort Smith, Andrew Brewer, assistant division engineer for ARDOT, said a tolled 14-mile extension was deemed “not viable” based on projected costs and revenue. Federal funding will be needed.

Governor Appoints Keith Gibson to Highway Commission

Fort Smith native Keith Gibson has been appointed as an Arkansas Highway Commissioner by Gov. Asa Hutchinson. He is the first person from western Arkansas to serve on the commission in decades.
